Sweetwater Wetlands Park and Tumblin Creek Sediment Basin Sampling

City of Gainesville

Water & Air Research, Inc. (Water & Air) has supported the City of Gainesville with sediment assessment services at Sweetwater Wetlands Park and Tumblin Creek sediment basins since 2017. These basins receive stormwater runoff from across the City, resulting in sediment accumulation that periodically requires removal. Because sediment may contain contaminants, testing is necessary to determine whether removed material can be reused or must be properly disposed of.

Water & Air collected sediment samples throughout the basins to characterize soil conditions and support evaluation of potential reuse or disposal options. Where possible, sediment depth measurements were also collected to help estimate the volume of material that may require removal. Samples were submitted to a local laboratory for analysis of compounds selected based on applicable regulatory requirements and potential sediment management options.

Following laboratory analysis, Water & Air prepared summary letters documenting the fieldwork, analytical results, and practical options for managing the sediment. These assessments provided the City with information to support planning for future sediment removal and determine appropriate handling and disposal methods.

Water & Air has also sampled sediment removed from other City locations, including the Duck Pond, where dredged material may be temporarily stored at City facilities to dry before reuse or disposal. In these cases, Water & Air collected samples directly from stored sediment piles and reviewed the laboratory results to identify potential reuse or disposal options. This ongoing support helps the City make informed decisions about sediment management at stormwater facilities and other locations.
